SOAS GLOCAL CALA Physical In-person Conference – The University of The Philippines Diliman, The Philippines

Date – May 16-19, 2023

Theme – Symbol and Society / Simbolo At Isang Lipunan, a theme highly pertinent to Asia at the present time, describes the need for symbolic representation in a rapidly changing Asia. Recent events have mediated a shift to online interaction, a shift which has intensified the development and the invention of new symbolisms and symbolic clusters that now have a limited use in offline spaces. Throughout the past decade, and more particularly over the past three years, global changes have elicited these new symbols of communication, exposing these symbols to contestation and (re)interpretation, owing to the need to deploy online technologies on a large scale. The SOAS GLOCAL CALA 2023 thus calls for renewed awareness and interpretations of Asian symbols and symbolisms, within global contexts.
