Life in its biological sense never ceases to be the object of literary, political, medical, scientific, and philosophical speculation and engagement, and literature often serves as the testing ground for thought experiments about the nature of life. This preoccupation has crossed epistemological, disciplinary, and generic boundaries, encompassing transdisciplinary perspectives and cross-cultural dialogues through and beyond the biological-material principle.

Late in their careers Foucault and Deleuze both explored an intriguing question: what makes life, or the state of being, desirable? Agamben has noted how this question reveals the importance of life in relation to truth discourses. For these philosophers, literature is an invitation to a voyage, a passage, and an adventure into a new dimension of life, indicating that forms of life are always yet “in the making,” denoting a creative genesis, transformation, and the creation of a new image of thought.

Literature, like biology, is itself “a passage of Life that traverses both the livable and the lived”; hence, the space of literature is a space to live and to change. Instead of seeing life as “one biological principle,” modern biology emphasizes the manifold tendencies of life in its encounter with different sorts of matter and other environments. Thus, it is imperative for scholars in literary and cultural studies to think through “encounter” in relation to the singularities of existence in a wide array of fields. In philosophy, art, and literature—in genres such as (post)modern fiction, science fiction, cyberpunk, queer fiction, world literature, and ecoliterature—along with fields such as new materialism, posthumanism, and various others, the “biological” is seen working as relations, opening up new areas of study. We welcome papers or panel proposals that engage with any aspect of the general theme of “Literature, Life, and the Biological.” Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

Comparative literature in the age of the Anthropocene
The unwanted or improper life
Power over life
Life and the virtual
The livable and the lived
Biopolitics/beyond biopolitics
Forms of life
Technology/technogenesis
Information and cybernetics
Translation
The posthuman, transhuman and nonhuman
New materialism
Animal studies

The official language for the conference is English. All participants will procure membership status in the Association the Association membership. Free lodging for paper presenters traveling from abroad is available for two nights during the conference. Those wishing to participate are invited to submit a 300-word abstract to Secretary General Dr. Joseph Yu (josephyu@mail.tku.edu.tw) by March 17, 2017. Submissions must be accompanied by the presenter’s name, e-mail address, tentative title, a short bio, as well as an indication of whether any computing or electronic equipment (e.g., laptop, projector) is needed.

We take great pleasure in announcing that the Eleventh Quadrennial International Conference on Comparative Literature, sponsored by the Comparative Literature Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and hosted by the English Department at Tamkang University, Tamsui, Taiwan, will be held on December 13-14, 2013. The general theme of the conference is “After the World: New Possibilities for Comparative Literature.”

Although comparative literature has always been a field in “permanent crisis,” the recent wave of alarm bells about its impending demise seems to be accompanied by a new sense of urgency. Taking the new warnings as an invitation to check our bearings and find new orientations, we would like to invite comparatists to submit papers that critically reflect on the changing position of our discipline in relation to what used to be called the world.

Globalization studies has shown one thing clearly: the (old) world has dissipated. On the one hand, we no longer live under “one” world, whether it is defined by culture, nationality, internationalism, or humanity. On the other hand, the recent geopolitical gravitation toward the non-West and the reemergence of the concept of world literature have paradoxically signified the appearance of “multiple” worlds and the reappearance of one new holistic system. In the 1960s, Deleuze was already anticipating this shift when he invoked the “chaosmos” as more fundamental than the monadic single world. More recently, critics and theorists have returned to Heideggerian “worlding” and “de-worlding,” experimented with new concepts such as the planet, the globe, or the “unworld,” or embarked upon emergent methodologies such as transnationalism, cosmopolitanism or cross-culturalism.

What remains (undead) in our discipline? What comparative mediations are called for to express the worlds without one world, the globe without fixed worlds, the emerging new forms of life and collectivities of place? How do new conceptualizations of the (post)world add to or compromise our sense-making of it, or intervene in our “reworlding” of its previous incarnations? By asking such questions, we are also looking for possible intimations of the contemporaneity of comparative literature and for ways to show how literary and other kinds of representation do reveal to us realities that are hopefully shareable, in this world or across multiple ones.

We welcome paper or panel proposals that engage with any aspect of the general theme. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

Taiwan-based students and scholars must join the Association in order to present at the conference (membership dues may be paid at the conference or at any time prior to the conference). Translating Risk: Literary Mediation in New Contexts

We take great pleasure in announcing that the Tenth Quadrennial International Conference on Comparative Literature, sponsored by the Comparative Literature Association of the Republic of China and hosted by Tamkang University in Tamsui, Taiwan, will be held on May 29 and 30, 2009. The general theme of the conference is “Translating Risk: Literary Mediation in New Contexts.”Risk is everywhere. Since the beginning of human development, risks of all sorts have generated adaptive responses that open paths for change and transformation. In particular, recent pronouncements about the rise of a “risk society” points to new contexts where intensified risks are producing far-reaching consequences. In a similar vein, the discipline of comparative literature has recently experienced an intensification of surmises about its “permanent crisis” into claims of its imminent death. We believe that possibilities remain to be explored in such memento mori assertions, especially if issues of disciplinary stability are considered in the more general context of risk-taking in an age of intensified uncertainty and unpredictable technology.More generally, we propose to explore the place of risk in literature, in the hope that understanding risk in the literary and cultural mediation of reality (already the “translation” of risk into stability) would prove helpful in shedding light on the current situation and the future of our discipline. The aim, therefore, is not to seek better schemes of risk management but to explore how the future of our discipline may be tied to structural transformations of our times, necessitating fresh outlooks.We welcome proposals which deal with risk in relation to literature or to the constitution of literature. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the following:1. (Discourses of/on) the crisis of comparative literature

The general theme of the conference is “Some Like It Hot, Others Don’t: Embodiment of Glocal Knowledge.”Weather is a fact that the human beings confront daily in their encounter with the natural world. And yet the quotidian nature of this encounter nevertheless has provoked the most amazing forms of systemization by the human being. However, the discursive power of weather and climate once wielded in explicating the various facets of humanity seems to have eluded closer scrutiny by recent critical discourses, so much so that we have nearly forgotten that as recent as the colonial times weather and climate were treated as quasi-scientific evidences for substantiating cultural prejudices. Race, sex, and many other bewildering and bewitching aspects of the tropical encounter, for example, have been facilely accounted for as being shaped by the forces of heat and hotness. At a time of intensifying globalization, the idea of heat has acquired yet other cultural functions: it for instance alerts us to the alarm bells rung over global warming and the raging fire of terrorist guerrilla warfare. To be sure, some types of heat need to be beaten and others don’t, depending on the politics involved. And we should never treat heat lightly.Under this general theme are seven subtopics:1. 會議說明本次會議籌備處由朱立民擔任秘書長，由紀秋郎擔任副秘書長，並由張漢良擔任議事組主任。秘書處各組雜務則由淡江大學教職員主理。
會議主題比較文學與中國文學分組主題 1. 東西主題學[負責人/陳鵬翔] 2. 比較文學理論[負責人/王建元] 3. 文類學[負責人/張漢良] 4. 亞洲比較學[負責人/林連祥] 5. 翻譯研究[負責人/彭鏡禧] 6. 中國文學專題[負責人/紀秋郎]說明 1. 參加「東西主題學」組的學者就個別主題與母題從事探源的工夫，總共提交九篇論文。 2. 「比較文學理論」組以結構主義、記號學、現象學、詮釋學、讀者反應理論以及後結構主義等六項為研討範圍，發表廿二篇論文。 3. 「文類學」組針對自傳、傳記、文選等文類，探討其歷史背景、讀者期望、作者用意等。 4. 「亞洲比較文學」組要在探討亞洲各國的文學關係，提交的論文共八篇，其中跟中國文學有關的佔七篇。 5. 「翻譯研究」組共有八篇論文，除了探討中國文學批評典籍的英譯問題外，還評估近三十年來中國文學的英譯。 6. 「中國文學專題」組則是第三屆會議創下的傳統，其目的在使不諳英文的國內學者能與通曉國語的外國學者直接溝通，以促成國際學術交流的目的；該組又分成「中文論文組」與「英文論文組」。前者共九篇：一篇有關文學批評，三篇論詩詞，五篇論小說；後者共八篇，其中一篇有關文學批評，兩篇論詩，其餘五篇論小說。英文方面的論文已挑選五十八篇，依組別分別刊登於＜淡江評論＞十四卷一、二、三、四期合刊（一九八三年秋－一九八四年夏）與十五卷一、二、三、四期合刊（一九八四年秋－一九八五年夏）兩期。

會議報導籌備處在會前採取多項措施，使得本屆會議相當成功。首先是透過《中外文學》與《淡江評論》分別刊載中英文會議公告。其次是致函國內各院校文學院相關學系，並邀請國外學者，就既定的六大議題提交論文。結果，反應相當熱烈，與會者連同國內學者和國外來自美、韓、日、加、德、荷、比、義、香港和科特的，計達二百五十餘人，提交的論文共八十四篇之多。

為提高國內學者的研究興趣並鼓勵向世界學界發表研究心得，本次會議特設完全以中文發表論文及討論的小組。同時，為求對會議主題有較深入的把握起見，大會並邀請知名學者專題演講。

第一屆國際比較文學會議之後兩年，比較文學會正式成立。全體理、監事與會員有鑒於國際比較文學會議的意義深重，遂決定於民國六十四年八月十一日至十五日，配合一九七五年八月二十五日至二十九日在澳洲召開的「國際現代語文會議」(International Federation for Modern Languages and Literature)，在淡水淡江文理學院會文館和中正紀念堂舉行第二屆國際比較文學會議(Second International Comparative Literature Conference)。

本次會議由比較文學會主持(Sponsor)，淡江文理學院主辦(Host)，台大、師大和政大三校贊助。
**籌備事宜**
全體理監事於民國六十三年正月十九日召開會議，成立籌備委員會，由全體理監事擔任籌備委員，由顏元叔先生擔任籌備處秘書長，由葉慶炳和李達三、紀秋郎三位先生擔任副秘書長，由姚一葦先生主理財務，由張淑先生負責公共關係。會議主題

本次為期六天的國際會議，經教育部、淡江文理學院以及亞洲協會的財務支援，在力求撙節的原則下，圓滿解決了與會學者的旅費、食宿與參觀活動等問題。會議期間，大會為使國外學術界瞭解我國現代文學方面的成就起見，特呈教育部轉請國立編譯館贈送比較文學會《英譯中國現代文學選集》(An Anthology of Modern Chinese Literature)七十部，再由比較文學會轉贈與會的國外學者。會議上宣讀的論文，經整理後，已發表於《淡江評論》六卷二期與七卷一期合刊本（一九七五年十月—一九七六年四月）上，部份中文論文則發表於《中外文學》四卷四期（民國六四年九月一日）。與會學者並曾於會議期間至慈湖恭謁蔣公靈櫬及遊覽故宮博物院、石門水庫等地。本次會議所邀請的學者，計歐美各國（英、荷、比、德、美、加等）四十餘人，亞太地區（日、韓、菲、香港、新加坡、新幾內亞等）一百二十餘人，國內一百六十餘人，盛況空前。

**籌備事宜**
本次會議由顏元叔先生擔任總籌備負責人，從民國五十九年夏開始籌備。會議主題
比較文學在中國（Comparative Literature in China）分組主題
1. 中國文學與西方文學之關係（Literary relations between China and the West）2. 中國文學與亞太其他地區文學之關係（Literary relations between China and other Asian and Pacific countries）3. 以西洋文學觀點研究中國文學之途徑（Application of Western literary theories and methods in the study of Chinese literature）4. 類比研究中之問題（Problems in analogical studies）5. 文學批評與文學理論問題（Problems in literary criticism and literary theory）6. 翻譯問題（Problems in translation）會議報導
與會人士來自歐（德﹑西﹑比諸國）﹑美﹑日﹑韓﹑菲等地區者三十餘人，我國學者旅居海外者四人，在國內者四十餘人（提出論文者八人）。重要論文經整理後發表於《淡江評論》(Tamkang Review)二卷二期與三卷一期合刊本（一九七一年十月至一九七二年四月），《純文學》並發行專刊（五八期）登載其中譯之論文。與會學者於會議期間還參觀故宮博物院及旅遊北海一周。

會議說明本次會議由比較文學會主持，淡江大學主辦；教育部、行政院國家科學委員會、文化建設委員會、太平洋文化基金會及中國基金會等單位贊助。大會秘書處由朱立民擔任秘書長，紀秋郎擔任副秘書長。

會議報導大會共接受論文七十六篇；各組的篇數分別是：第一組十一篇，第二組十九篇，第三組九篇，第四組八篇，第五組十三篇，第六組十六篇。其中，國內學者提交之論文共二十篇，以中英文撰寫者各半。國外學者來自美國、加拿大、南韓、日本、比利時、香港等地。國內外學者共達一百五十多位。會議論文以英文撰寫者循例登在《中外文學》上。

會議說明本次會議籌備處由朱立民擔任秘書長，由紀秋郎擔任副秘書長，並由張漢良擔任議事組主任。秘書處各組雜務則由淡江大學教職員主理。
會議主題比較文學與中國文學分組主題 1. 東西主題學[負責人/陳鵬翔] 2. 比較文學理論[負責人/王建元] 3. 文類學[負責人/張漢良] 4. 亞洲比較學[負責人/林連祥] 5. 翻譯研究[負責人/彭鏡禧] 6. 中國文學專題[負責人/紀秋郎]說明 1. 參加「東西主題學」組的學者就個別主題與母題從事探源的工夫，總共提交九篇論文。 2. 「比較文學理論」組以結構主義、記號學、現象學、詮釋學、讀者反應理論以及後結構主義等六項為研討範圍，發表廿二篇論文。 3. 「文類學」組針對自傳、傳記、文選等文類，探討其歷史背景、讀者期望、作者用意等。 4. 「亞洲比較文學」組要在探討亞洲各國的文學關係，提交的論文共八篇，其中跟中國文學有關的佔七篇。 5. 「翻譯研究」組共有八篇論文，除了探討中國文學批評典籍的英譯問題外，還評估近三十年來中國文學的英譯。 6. 「中國文學專題」組則是第三屆會議創下的傳統，其目的在使不諳英文的國內學者能與通曉國語的外國學者直接溝通，以促成國際學術交流的目的；該組又分成「中文論文組」與「英文論文組」。前者共九篇：一篇有關文學批評，三篇論詩詞，五篇論小說；後者共八篇，其中一篇有關文學批評，兩篇論詩，其餘五篇論小說。英文方面的論文已挑選五十八篇，依組別分別刊登於＜淡江評論＞十四卷一、二、三、四期合刊（一九八三年秋－一九八四年夏）與十五卷一、二、三、四期合刊（一九八四年秋－一九八五年夏）兩期。

會議報導籌備處在會前採取多項措施，使得本屆會議相當成功。首先是透過《中外文學》與《淡江評論》分別刊載中英文會議公告。其次是致函國內各院校文學院相關學系，並邀請國外學者，就既定的六大議題提交論文。結果，反應相當熱烈，與會者連同國內學者和國外來自美、韓、日、加、德、荷、比、義、香港和科特的，計達二百五十餘人，提交的論文共八十四篇之多。
